The Kano State Government has commenced medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples under its Mass Wedding Scheme, aimed at ensuring that intending spouses enter marriage in good health and free from infectious diseases that could pose risks to their families and the wider community.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS and Other Communicable Diseases, Dr. Usman Bashir, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the agency’s headquarters, where the screening exercise officially began.
Dr. Bashir explained that the tests include screening for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other communicable diseases that may affect marital life and family well-being.
According to him, the exercise is designed to enable couples know their health status before marriage, while also providing them with counseling and guidance on how to protect themselves and their future families from preventable diseases.
He noted that the initiative forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to promote public health, strengthen family welfare, and reduce the spread of communicable diseases across communities.
The Executive Secretary added that qualified health professionals and adequate medical facilities have been deployed to ensure that the screening process is conducted efficiently, professionally, and with strict confidentiality.
He commended the Kano State Government for its continued support in providing the resources needed for the exercise, stressing that the intervention would contribute significantly to building healthier families and a healthier society.
Dr. Bashir also urged all participating couples to cooperate fully with health officials and adhere to medical advice and counseling provided during and after the screening process.
The Mass Wedding Scheme is one of the social welfare initiatives of the Kano State Government aimed at supporting young people with limited financial means to establish families while promoting responsible and healthy marriages.
