The Managing Director of Gerawa Rice Mills, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad Gerawa, has called on governors of Northern Nigerian states to set aside political differences and work together to develop unified policies and strategies aimed at boosting agriculture, strengthening industries, and ensuring food security for the people of the region and the country at large.
Gerawa made the call during an exclusive interview with journalists at his office in Tokarawa while reflecting on the third anniversary of the administration of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
He described agriculture as the backbone of the Northern economy and the primary source of livelihood for millions of people, stressing the need for regional collaboration to support farmers and increase agricultural productivity.
According to him, greater cooperation among Northern governors would help in formulating effective policies that provide farmers with access to improved seeds, fertilizers, agricultural inputs, extension services, and affordable financing.
Gerawa expressed concern over the challenges faced by farmers in recent years, noting that many have been unable to make reasonable profits due to rising production costs and unstable market conditions.
“Many farmers have not recorded satisfactory returns on their investments over the past two years. As a result, some have reduced the size of their farms while others have abandoned farming altogether. This is a serious issue that requires urgent attention from government and other stakeholders,” he said.
He warned that unless deliberate measures are taken to support farmers and revitalize the agricultural sector, Nigeria could face serious food shortages in the future, further worsening the cost-of-living challenges facing citizens.
Speaking on industrial development, Gerawa emphasized the importance of local processing of agricultural produce, saying it creates jobs, increases farmers’ earnings, adds value to local products, and reduces dependence on imported goods.
He urged governments at all levels to reduce the cost of electricity and other energy sources in order to support local industries, lower production costs, and enhance competitiveness.
The business leader also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for creating a conducive environment for business activities and maintaining peace and stability in Kano State.
He noted that the peaceful atmosphere in Kano has encouraged investment and enabled businesses to operate more efficiently and confidently.
Gerawa further stated that the relationship between Gerawa Group and the Kano State Government remains strong and productive, leading to fruitful collaboration in areas of economic development, job creation, and infrastructure development.
He added that the company continues to undertake various projects across the state while contributing to economic growth, supporting farmers, and promoting value addition through local processing.
He concluded by calling on governments, private sector players, and other stakeholders to work together in building a sustainable economy capable of guaranteeing food security, reducing poverty, creating employment opportunities, and improving the overall welfare of citizens.
