The Kano State Government has announced that it has successfully achieved 80 percent of its health sector targets within the first three years of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed this during a press briefing held at his office at Nassarawa Hospital in Kano.
Dr. Yusuf stated that within just two years of his leadership at the Ministry of Health, the state government recorded remarkable achievements in implementing healthcare improvement programmes, particularly in reducing maternal and childbirth-related deaths and strengthening maternal and child healthcare services across the state.
According to him, significant progress has been made in the provision of modern medical equipment, renovation of healthcare facilities, and enhancement of healthcare service delivery to ensure that residents of Kano have access to quality medical care.
The commissioner noted that the remaining 20 percent of the ministry’s targets would be achieved before the end of the year, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fulfilling all its promises in the health sector.
He further explained that since the current administration assumed office, Kano State has not experienced any major outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, Lassa fever, or meningitis. He attributed this achievement to the government’s preventive healthcare measures, immunization campaigns, public awareness programmes, and rapid emergency response mechanisms.
Dr. Yusuf also revealed that the state government has recruited a substantial number of healthcare workers to address staff shortages in health facilities across the state. He added that plans are underway to employ more health personnel in order to further strengthen healthcare services.
In a major effort to improve emergency healthcare delivery, the commissioner announced that the government is preparing to provide 484 mini ambulances, one for each of the state’s 484 wards. He explained that the initiative is aimed at ensuring the free and rapid transportation of patients from communities to hospitals, especially during medical emergencies.
According to him, the programme will help reduce delays in accessing healthcare and contribute significantly to saving lives, particularly those of pregnant women, children, and other vulnerable groups requiring urgent medical attention.
The commissioner commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support for the health sector and called on the people of Kano State to continue supporting the administration to enable it to sustain its developmental projects and improve the welfare of citizens.
He emphasized that the Kano State Government will continue to prioritize healthcare as part of its commitment to ensuring that every resident has access to affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare services.
