The Nigerian Democracy Working Group has expressed concern over the reported involvement of the 15th Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, in an alleged anti-APC rally in Kano, where posters and banners bearing the images of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf were reportedly pulled down and destroyed.
The group described the reported development as unfortunate and urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint and uphold peace, law and order in the state.
According to the group, while every citizen has the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and expression, such rights should be exercised within the confines of the law and should not involve the destruction of property, intimidation or actions capable of creating fear among law-abiding citizens.
The group further noted that issues surrounding the Kano Emirate are currently before the appropriate court, stressing the need for all parties to respect the judicial process and allow the court to determine the matter.
It expressed concern that the alleged appearance of the Emir at what appeared to be a political rally, while the matter remains sub judice, could heighten political tension and create unnecessary controversy in the state.
The Nigerian Democracy Working Group called on political actors, traditional institutions and their supporters to avoid actions that could undermine the peace and stability of Kano State.
The group also urged security agencies to ensure the protection of lives and property, as well as political campaign materials belonging to all parties, while maintaining neutrality and enforcing the law without fear or favour.
It further appealed to traditional rulers to remain above partisan politics and continue to serve as symbols of unity, peace and reconciliation for all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful democratic participation, respect for the rule of law and the protection of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
