The Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Minna, the state capital, following violent unrest reported in parts of the city.
The curfew took effect immediately after Friday prayers and will remain in force until the state government issues a further directive.
In a statement issued by the state government, residents of Minna were directed to remain indoors and avoid all unnecessary movements throughout the duration of the curfew.
The government also directed security agencies to ensure full enforcement of the curfew and take necessary measures to protect the lives and property of residents while restoring peace across the city.
The governor’s decision followed protests and violence that occurred in Minna on Friday, which reportedly created tension in some parts of the state capital.
Reports indicate that the unrest was linked to the deaths of 37 people who were allegedly involved in illegal mining activities and were in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna.
The incident reportedly triggered protests and unrest, prompting the state government to impose the curfew as part of measures to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.
The Niger State Government has also appealed to residents of Minna to remain calm, stay indoors and comply with the directives of security agencies to help maintain peace and protect lives and property.
