The Kano State Government has raised concern that Nigeria remains one of the leading countries in Africa with the highest burden of malaria, noting that Kano alone accounts for about 18 percent of reported cases. This has prompted the state government to intensify emergency measures to curb the spread of the disease across the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed this during a press briefing held as part of activities marking the World Malaria Day. He explained that the government has prioritized the provision of antimalarial drugs, diagnostic kits, and other essential medical supplies to strengthen the fight against the disease.
According to him, the government is also working to improve public awareness on preventive measures, especially in rural communities where mosquito prevalence is higher. He stressed that collaboration between the government and the public is crucial in reducing the number of infections.
Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf urged residents to adopt preventive practices such as the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, maintaining clean environments, and avoiding stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.
He further emphasized that anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, and weakness should promptly visit a health facility for proper testing and treatment.
Health experts note that malaria remains one of the deadliest diseases in Nigeria, particularly affecting children and pregnant women, hence the need for sustained collective action.
The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting healthcare facilities with adequate resources to ensure a steady reduction in malaria cases across Kano State.
