The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Women Against Violence Empowered Through Sustainability (WAVES) Project, has successfully concluded a two-day capacity building workshop for twenty (20) Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Desk Police Officers drawn from various divisions across Kano State.
The workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of law enforcement officers in responding effectively, professionally, and compassionately to cases of gender-based violence. The training focused on key areas, including:
1. Fundamentals of trauma-informed policing, which emphasized understanding trauma, minimizing re-traumatization of survivors, and adopting empathetic approaches when handling GBV cases.
2. Legal frameworks and pathways for GBV in Nigeria, as well as professional case documentation and management, which provided in-depth insights into relevant national and state laws, procedural requirements, referral pathways, and the importance of accurate, timely, and professional documentation.
3. Effective communication and interagency collaboration, which highlighted the need for clear communication, coordination, and collaboration among stakeholders involved in GBV response.
A panel discussion: “The Police as a Pillar of Community Trust and Justice”, explored strategies for building public confidence, improving police-community relations, and promoting transparency and accountability in GBV response.
The workshop concluded with interactive sessions, open discussions, and experience-sharing among participants, providing an opportunity to reflect on challenges, best practices, and actionable steps to improve GBV response across police divisions in Kano State.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, sfipma, mnim, mnips, masis, expressed appreciation to WAVES Project for their support and charged the officers to utilize the knowledge gained to ensure quality service delivery.
