KANO, September 9, 2026: A citizen-driven development movement, KANO 440 IN FOCUS, has been officially launched with a commitment to promote a new development agenda aimed at restoring Kano’s position as a leading centre of commerce, industry, knowledge, culture and human development.
The movement was inaugurated on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Gidan Mallam Aminu Kano, Mambayya House, Gwammaja, Kano, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for an inclusive, innovative and accountable approach to the development of the state.
KANO 440 IN FOCUS said Kano has historically played a significant role in the economic, commercial, cultural and intellectual development of Northern Nigeria, but currently faces challenges including unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, insecurity, poor urban planning, educational gaps, healthcare needs, poverty and declining economic opportunities.
According to the movement, its major objective is to bring together citizens, professionals, traditional and community leaders, youths, women, entrepreneurs, academics, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to identify development challenges and promote practical and measurable solutions.
The name KANO 440 represents Kano State, its 44 Local Government Areas and zero tolerance for abandonment, with the philosophy that no local government, ward, community or citizen should be left behind in the state’s development journey.
The movement has adopted nine priority development agendas, covering Education and Human Capital Development; Economic Development, Commerce and Industrialisation; Agriculture and Food Security; Infrastructure, Urban Renewal and Housing; Health and Social Protection; Security, Peace and Community Resilience; Youth, Women, Employment and Innovation; Environment, Water and Climate Resilience; and Governance, Culture and Civic Responsibility.
KANO 440 IN FOCUS also plans to establish a 44-LGA Development Observatory to document development challenges and opportunities across the state and develop a comprehensive database that could serve as the basis for evidence-based advocacy and policy recommendations.
The movement will be led initially by a nine-member Founding Executive Council, while plans are underway to establish coordinating structures across the 44 Local Government Areas, wards and communities.
It also plans to conduct community surveys, engage stakeholders, publish policy briefs and an annual Kano Development Report, as well as monitor development indicators across the state.
The movement emphasized that its activities are designed around civic participation, research, public education, constructive advocacy and accountability, rather than political patronage or personal political mobilisation.
It further announced a 90-day foundational action plan, which includes establishing its organisational framework, conducting consultations across the 44 LGAs, developing LGA development profiles, publishing a Citizens’ Charter and presenting its development agenda to relevant stakeholders.
The organisers said KANO 440 IN FOCUS is intended to become a permanent civic development platform capable of surviving changes in political administrations and leadership.
They stressed that the movement is not built around an individual but around an idea: that Kano belongs to everyone and its development is a collective responsibility.
