The Kano State Government has inaugurated a new Technical Working group on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen peacebuilding across the state.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the initiative reflects one of the key priorities of the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration, which is promoting lasting peace, security, and community resilience.
He noted that the rise of violent extremism poses a major threat to society, exploiting fear and creating division.
According to him, confronting such challenges requires unity, vigilance, and strong cooperation rooted in respect for human rights and the rule of law.
The Commissioner explained that the Technical Working Group has been established to develop coordinated, evidence-based, and community-driven strategies to stop radicalization and strengthen resilience across the state.
The group will focus on understanding the drivers of extremism, supporting communities, and ensuring inclusive and just responses.
He stressed that preventing violent extremism is a collective responsibility involving educators, religious and traditional leaders, civil society groups, youth organizations, security agencies, and national partners such as the Office of the National Security Adviser. He emphasized that the voices of local communities must guide the process.
The Commissioner expressed confidence that the Technical Working Group will harmonize different stakeholder perspectives and produce a strong State Action Plan that will also be domesticated across all local government areas of Kano State.
He directed the Group Secretariat to produce a costed operational plan within three months, ahead of the validation of the Kano State Action Plan on PCVE. He added that the plan is expected to be launched by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, before the end of the first quarter of 2026.
The Kano State Government reaffirmed its full commitment to supporting the working group with the required space, resources, and policy backing.
