The Coalition of Ulama and Islamic Organizations in Kano State has strongly condemned what it described as unwarranted and provocative interference by the United States Government and the American Congress in Nigeria’s internal affairs, particularly regarding the practice of Sharia law and the operation of the Hisbah institution.
In a statement signed by Dr. Saidu Ahmad Dukawa on behalf of the Coalition of Ulama and Islamic Organizations in Kano State.
The coalition rejected alleged calls urging the Nigerian Government to abolish Sharia laws and dismantle the Hisbah corps, describing such moves as an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty, democratic principles, and constitutional rights.
The coalition emphasized that Sharia law remains a constitutional and God-given right of Muslims in Kano State and other parts of Nigeria, applicable strictly to the Muslim population. It further stated that the Hisbah institution is legally backed by state laws passed by Houses of Assembly and rooted in Islamic teachings.
According to the statement, Hisbah has played a vital role in promoting peaceful coexistence, protecting places of worship—including mosques and churches—and supporting security efforts during periods of tension. The group noted that Islamic and Christian leaders in Kano have repeatedly collaborated to calm tensions and foster harmony among residents.
The coalition warned that external pressure and misinformation could undermine fragile inter-religious peace in Nigeria and called on both the Federal and State Governments to resist intimidation from foreign powers, no matter how influential, and instead remain accountable to the Nigerian people.
It also urged Islamic scholars and clerics across the country to embark on sustained alqanut (special prayers) for divine intervention against insecurity and all forces threatening national peace, while calling on Muslims to repent, uphold Islamic values, and continue supporting lawful religious institutions.
Reaffirming its faith in Nigeria’s sovereignty, the coalition appealed to all Nigerians to remain united, reject divisive narratives, and continue resolving differences peacefully.
