The Parents’ Association of students at Maryam Abacha University in Kano has called on the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission to intervene in a complaint they filed over the ₦750,000 graduation fee imposed by the institution.
The parents described the amount as excessively high and an unnecessary burden on families already struggling with economic hardship.
Speaking to journalists, one of the parents, Alhaji Yusuf Muhammad, said they approached the commission because the fee does not reflect the current economic reality.
He explained that many families are distressed, especially after the university warned that any student who fails to pay the fee would not receive their certificate upon graduation.
Also speaking, Hajiya Fatima Itama, another parent whose child is set to graduate, said the fee has thrown many parents into confusion and fear, stressing that some may be unable to meet the requirement despite years of sacrifice paying tuition and other charges.
Responding to the complaint, the Chairman of the Kano Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Sa’idu Yahaya, confirmed that the commission had received the petition and would conduct a thorough investigation.
He said the commission would engage the university to hear their position and review all documents related to the disputed fee to ensure that due process was followed and that parents are not subjected to unfair financial pressure.
